10/10The 1200cc V-Twin engine is extremely advanced and refined for a Harley
Offered with the same Revolution Max 1250T DOHC liquid-cooled 60° V-twin engine as the previous 2021 model, the 2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S is very smooth, refined and progressive for a Harley engine. This engine has variable valve timing and therefore the torque it offers is superior compared to many other bikes in the Harley range.
With 120 hp and 94 pound-feet of torque, the 2022 Sportster S has addictive low- and mid-range performance. Vibrations are minimal, the 6-speed gearbox is well designed and offers a positive shift feel. While you can't expect much top power from this long-stroke engine, it's pretty reasonable compared to the competition.

This is a pretty modern engine that helps it show off the true potential of the Sportster S. This Revolution Max engine doesn't rattle as much as many out of the box, and that's a big plus, especially for people interested in long road trips. . Driver fatigue will also be reduced due to less vibration.
One of the main reasons for the lack of vibration is the rubber-mounted motorcycle components. As a result, the foot pegs, mirrors, handlebars, etc. they lack low- and mid-range vibration. However, the driver may experience vibrations as the engine approaches the rev limiter.

8/10Typical Harley riding position is retained
Harley purists will enjoy the 2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S's relaxed, upright riding position. The handlebars are fairly wide and easy to reach without leaning too far forward. As a result, most riders would not experience wrist or shoulder pain, both of which are common in more sporty riding positions.
The forward footrests also add to the comfort. Perfect switch positioning, an easy-to-read instrument panel, and a shapely tank for the rider to support their legs are some of the other benefits of this design. However, this is a single seater and therefore no passenger space is provided.

With a curb weight of 502 pounds, the 2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S wouldn't be the most inspiring bike money could buy. However, with decent weight distribution and the steel trellis frame with forged and stamped joints, it's reasonably fun to drive.
Although the Sportster S is a lazy bike for sudden changes of direction, largely due to its high curb weight, it's perfectly capable of cornering without feeling overly jumpy. The bike dives into corners quite well, stays on the road with no problem, and goes off at speed. The footrests do limit the sloping areas quite a bit though, as they tend to scrape up pretty quickly.

6/10Gas mileage is better than some rivals
The 2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S does not see any changes to the powertrain or design and therefore the fuel economy figures remain unchanged. This motorcycle offers a combined gas mileage of 49 mpg, which is about 16 miles more than what the Indian Scout Bobber offers.
The 2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S retains that3.1 gallon tank capacity, which is not the best in the segment. This limits the touring suitability of this motorcycle. With such a small tank, the 2022 Sportster S could only achieve a combined tank range of about 151 miles.

This is easily one of the best-looking bikes to come out of the Harley stable and is one of the reasons the Sportster S became such a bestseller. The front end looks pretty good due to the massively wide tires (Dunlop Harley-Davidson Series Radials; 160/70R-17), LED headlights, and raised handlebars.
As for the side profile, the 2022 Sportster S sports a long, curved tank with the perfectly etched Harley-Davidson logo. Side mirrors, the massive exhaust system with gold accents and gold-plated engine components add to the sporty character. The rear has a neat setup that's complemented by the 180/70R-16 tire, LED taillight, and LED turn signals.
4/10Build quality is superior to many other Harley models.
One of the biggest criticisms of many Harley-Davidson models is lackluster quality control and poor craftsmanship. Being a brand that offers a lot of expensive bikes, reliability issues were also common. However, the Sportster S is a cut above most of these Harleys and feels exceptionally well built.
All the fairings present on the bike feel very tight and solid and don't bend like some of the competitors. The paint quality is impeccable and feels very high quality. The quality of the switchgear, which gives many Harleys a rather mediocre reputation, is also excellent on the Sportster S. There are also no exposed wires anywhere on the bike.

3/10Driving through the streets is a breeze
The 2022 Harley-Davidson Sportster S is a decent deal if you intend to navigate through congested city traffic conditions. Even if the heater is a bit taller, there are a few qualities that make this bike quite livable for a daily rider.
One of the main qualities is the weight distribution, which makes it quite comfortable in intermittent traffic. This hides the high curb weight well, and that is definitely an advantage. The fuel is well calibrated and it doesn't feel very choppy like the Honda Rebel 1100. Ride quality isn't the best of all though.
2/10Highway driving is pleasantly comfortable
This cruiser comes with fully adjustable 43mm inverted Showa forks up front, and this system has 3.6" of travel. While the system is fairly stiff at low speeds, it becomescomfortable enough at highway speeds.
The stiff suspension setup provides rock-solid stability at highway speeds and the bike is unaffected by crosswinds. All the bumps in the roads soak up reasonably well too. However, due to the very small suspension travel, larger bumps cause problems.

Unlike the other Harle-Davidsons, this 2022 Sportster S feels very sporty and fun. The main reason for this is the excellent powertrain that is embedded between the chassis and the tank. The sharp throttle response this engine offers is addictive, and the engine doesn't require downshifting for fast passes, which is extremely fun on back roads and highways.
The 6-speed gearbox is also quite competent. There were no false neutrals and gear changes were pretty crisp for a Harley. This is also one of the few Harleys that didn't feel like exploding higher in the rev band. Torque spread is wide throughout the rev range and the bike never gets out of breath.
